MISSION STATEMENT
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Gandhi
The above quote sums up our philosophy. Our love extends to all animals and we will help any being in distress if we can. However, our focus is on the tens of thousands of cats and kittens that live miserably on our streets or end up being put to death in our shelters every year. We are a grassroots, all-volunteer, organization dedicated to saving as many homeless, abandoned, or persecuted cats and kittens as we possibly can by either adopting them into loving homes or implementing TNR (trap/neuter/return) to prevent unwanted births in feral colonies.
Our belief is founded on the premise that all creatures are created equally and that we merely share this planet with all its inhabitants. That man can and has dominated other beings to the point of obliterating them from existence is a tragedy. That we, as a race, can exterminate millions of innocent lives every year in our shelters and let animal cruelty and abuse go unpunished in so many instances, is testament to the fact that changes in our society have to occur for animals and humans alike. As a powerful, so-called “civilized” race, it is our duty to protect the innocent. This has to begin at home and in our schools with our children. We must instill in future generations that all life is precious and meaningful and deserves freedom and respect, whether that be by protecting habitat in order for wildlife to continue to exist or by rescuing an injured or abandoned kitten from the street and taking responsibility for its well-being; we must not ignore the suffering that surrounds us.
Through education, awareness, and compassion we hope one day our nation’s shelters and, in fact, the shelters of the world will not have to resort to euthanasia as a means to curtail the pet over-population explosion. We hope mankind will recognize that all creatures have feelings and emotions and are to be respected and treated humanely.
Save A Kitty is based in Acton, just outside Los Angeles. We have created a small safe haven for our foster kitties, where they enjoy romping and playing in a large indoor area and also have access to a completely enclosed outdoor area where they can bask in the sun and watch the native wildlife. We also have a network of foster volunteers.
Los Angeles has a huge feral cat population and, unfortunately, thousands upon thousands of cats and kittens deemed feral by Los Angeles County shelters are euthanized every year. Over the years, Save A Kitty has rescued many, many litters of unweaned kittens from the shelters, as those are the first to be euthanized because they do not have the manpower to care for them. For further information about feral cats, please see our section on Feral Cats.
On average, we care for and/or rescue from the streets (including TNR) approximately 200 cats a year. In December 2009, Save A Kitty was responsible for exposing an animal cruelty/hoarding case and coordinated a rescue with SPCA LA. Over 115 cats and kittens were extracted from deplorable conditions and placed into various rescue groups. The rescue can be seen on our site under media or by going to youtube.com under “Abused cats rescued in Granada Hills”. We have also worked with Los Angeles Animal Services on other cases and are partners with them in their New Hope Program.
